13 Questions with @RogerC (November 2022)

Where do you get your inspiration for what you build?

I get inspiration from various things but mostly it's the beauty of wood and trying to turn it into something cool and interesting.

2- Are you good at cooking and What is your favorite thing to cook?

I would say yes, but I haven't eaten any vegetables (other than corn on the cob and potatoes) for 45 years, the day my Dad stopped making me so it's easy to make what I like.

3- What is a book that you think everyone needs to read and why?

The only books I read are instructional-type books, i.e wood finishing, photography, etc.

4- How do you pick wood for your project?

I buy exceptional wood when I have the opportunity and it may be stored for years until the right project presents itself to the size of the piece of wood.

5- What’s one thing people don’t know about you?

There was a time when my future was so bright I used to have to wear shades!

6- What was the biggest woodworking-related event that happened that changed your life?
The day I walked into the store and saw Purple Heart for the first time followed by several other exotics that I never knew existed, it was then I had a desire to find other beautiful woods to use and share the beauty.

7- What is the best and worst thing about woodworking?
The best thing is it gives me a purpose in life and the worst is the most beautiful woods are the hardest to work with.

8- What other hobbies besides woodworking do you have?
That changes but currently I still find time to photograph wildlife, surfing, concerts, and air shows. I also try to ride my electric skateboard as much as I can.

9- Who is your favorite woodworker?
There are a lot of guys doing great things, but I used to live about 5 miles from Sam Maloof and visited with him a few times, and as everyone knows he was special.

10- Hamburger or Taco? and why?
I would choose Hamburgers (Ketchup only) because they're ALL-AMERICAN right?

11- Who is the most interesting person you’ve met and talked with?
I’m a big fan of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and have met a few people that work in that industry so I would have to say one of those guys.

12- Do you have a day job or are you retired?

I do have a day job as an access compliance specialist, surveying sites and managing construction for ADA compliance, which usually involves upgrading restrooms, door hardware, parking, and adding signage.

13- How did you hear about Woodbarter, and What keeps you coming back?

I was searching the web for images of flame Box Elder with a lot of red and the best images led me here (never did find any to purchase), I kept coming back I guess due to the Forum section and the various topics and wood for sale.

I do have one block of FBE that our founder, @Kevin Jaynes sent me before he passed away, but I'll be keeping that one. Have you checked with @justallan he may have some fbe burls to part with.

Great stuff Roger, thanks for sharing!

What size wood blocks do you use most frequently - I'll see what I might have in FBE. But agree about checking with Allan for FBE burl - primo!

Great interview Roger! I really envy the fact that you met Sam Maloof and (presumably) saw the house and shop. I wish I could've met him, he was indeed special!

I saw "RogerC" and thought Roger Clemens?? Naw, couldn't be. Then I read about riding your electric skateboard and that sealed it - pretty sure the Rocket has never been on an electric skateboard in his life. Good read tho.
