Doing some tourist things today and came to this carved bird in a small glass case. Sorry for the reflection but I couldn’t get around it.

This was carved between 1790 and 1795 by a Frenchman named Jean Demonteuil. It is a single piece of pear, including the string and the fly on the bird’s neck. The guide said the eyes of the fly are faceted but I could not get close enough to see that. I would guess this to be maybe 6-8 inches not including the string.

I had to google this guy and did find a few other examples of his hanging birds, so the images below are from the web. A link is at the bottom if you are intrigued.

Was told he went blind at an early age.

That's some amazing work, is the bird you photographed attached/carved from the backboard like the other examples appear to be?

The bird was in one of the “state rooms” in this small English country house.

Burghley House was built 1558- 1587 for Sir William Cecil, the High Treasurer for Queen Elizabeth I. The Cecil family still live here.
