The hollowform is almost finished - only a couple more coats of polyurethane on the bottom of the piece left to go - so here are a few pix. I'm very pleased at how this came out, given that:

(a) it's twice the height and diameter of the hollowforms I've made up to this point;
(b) it's the first one I've made with this captured-bar hollowing rig;
(c) it's a finishing technique I'd not tried before, learned from a member of the turning club I go to;
and (d) it was wood I picked up from the side of the road back in March.

Enough waffle - here are the pix :cool: :

Nice work Duncan! The captured rigs do take the drama out of hollowing, that’s for sure.
The bottom is bigger proportion wise than many do perhaps, but better than many of the tippy little hollow forms I’ve done. What counts is whether it came out how you want. I’m always amazed at the difference in how a piece looks once you pull it off the lathe and stand it up.:wacko:

Thanks! I attended Totally Turning this year, and Ted Sokolowski did a session he called "the perfect finish". His bottom line was you can't have a perfect finish over an imperfect surface, so do the prep thoroughly and you are more than halfway there.
