Bookmatched Spalted burl maple insert top
    Walnut sides
    Maple base
Can’t decide if I should stain the base to match the walnut sides?

IMO the light colored base draws your attention away from the top. But then again what do I know about it. Very nice box by the way:old:

Should have used walnut. Staining exact match in my opinion is not very doable. Leave it, take off and use walnut or... JMO. But i am not of big bottoms, on boxes or.... dont know why, but never quite looks right to me.

Like the box, but the base is too light in color. If you could match the top it would probably look fine. Otherwise, probably should stick with Walnut for the base. Chuck

I'd leave it... It's going to take on an entirely different appearance when you finish it. The Walnut and the Spalt both are going to darken, the white on the bottom is going to pop, but that spalt is going to grab your attention when finished. I think you've got a good combination working there Justin, don't give up on it before it meets it's potential.

Never made a box in my life, but I'm with everyone else on staining the bottom. Unless you're some mad genius with stain it won't match the walnut and folks will notice. A stain with a little tint to get the bottom color closer to top might work. They won't match perfect but that's OK because they will be separated by the walnut.

Is the box a gift? Spec made? Request from someone? If it's a gift does the person like bold, contrasty colors? If it's for sale a walnut, or at least darker bottom would probably sell quicker. If you're making for someone ask them.

It will be a nice looking box whatever you decide.
