My names is Jonah, I’m an aircraft mechanic by trade. I am just getting into wood working through gunsmithing and stock refinishing work. Have also done a few unrelated projects in the past and have a desire to learn more about old school woodworking with chisels, hand planes, etc. as well as old oil finishing techniques and practices.

Welcome from Austria. If you post 4 more times you can make a post anywhere. Just don't listen to the texans they... well... (whispers) they're sort of crazy.
Have you got a favorite wood species?

So as I understand, I need 5 posts in order to be active elsewhere on the forum. However, my introductory thread will not let me post beyond the initial first post. Am I misunderstanding and need to start 5 separate threads to get my five posts? Thanks for any help I can get!

I like Southern Yellow Pine, plan to make a proper workbench out of it some day… Love some nicely figured walnut in a well made gunstock with the kind of oil finish that highlights the chatoyance and makes the grain dance in the light.

I see you made it back onto the original thread.
Welcome from Crossville TN
I prefer hardwood for workbenches but that's just me. Walnut is hard to beat on a rifle with a little crotch feather and a good clean finish

Jonah, this is certainly not a deliberate attempt to make things hard for new members. In fact, we are a very welcoming forum (even the damned Texans) and I'm sure an admin (@woodtickgreg, @ripjack13 ) will sort this out.

@AV8R317 Do you not see the bottom of the page where you can write replies and where it says post reply?

A good friend of mine recommended yellow pine
