On Christmas day I ventured out into the desert to legally scrounge up what ever I could. I also remembered @Mark Peet asked about some Ocotillio once , so when I saw a couple dead ones, I got out my sawsall and cut the sticks off the root ball. One of the sticks was large enough for me to use, so I cut it for myself. A couple days ago, I cut off a small piece on my bandsaw.
Man, was I surprised at what I had. It is solid wood just a little harder than pine, but this particular piece has streaks and pretty nice looking growth rings if you can see them. Here are the pictures. Knowing about Ocotillio for over 50 years, I would have never ever thought of cutting a stick to see what was inside.....
This piece is 2" wide, but I've seen them upwards of 3-4" OD when alive.
