Just finished this set made of black, Bog Oak. The coloring is due to the tannins in the soil (bog) where the wood lay buried for several hundred and possibly several thousand years. This particular block came from Ukraine. The oldest found to date is 8500 years old. These fit the full size 1911 frame and are available on the website.

Thanks David. I think I used to know a girl in high school by that name, Wenge. LOL
Every time I see your posts it reminds me of the pistol match I shot some years ago in Enid.

Curt, how does the bog oak cut and carve compared to modern white or red oak? I've seen it for sale many times.
Hey Larry, I've not used any white or red oak so I can't really give an opinion but, it seems to me to be a little easier to work than some other "hard" woods I've used like maple. I don't know if it's because of it's age or that it has been altered chemically from all those ears lying in water and moist soil.
