Just finished this set made of English Walnut, harvested from a tree in Northern California. I cut and shaped this set specifically to fit with an extended magwell. Walnut has always been one of my favorites, and this species seems to have more contrast and character. Warm tones, with loads of figuring. The only dislike I might have for building grips specifically to fit with a magwell is, the front and rear edges have to be thin to follow the radius of the magwell and I prefer edges front and back that are a little "beefier", and not so thin. The wood is still gorgeous though!

This reminds me that I have a HUGE slab of 12/4 English walnut that I need to process. Beautiful wood.

Sweet! I think I have a piece that looks similar, will have to go find now ! So, is that pretty typical of English walnut or do other walnuts sometimes look like that?

Thanks Tim. I've not had any other walnut that had this amount of contrast or that same color but, that being said, there may be some. I've just never seen any.

Curt, that English Walnut you used definitely has some great contrast. Did it start out looking even close to this, and what finish are you using?
