Extension of the “Free Wood” posts about the Electric pole crossties...

My Dad told me once, “It’s a good thing you don’t build airplanes…”. My shave horse is turning into a Shave Clydesdale...

Got the legs on, side adjustment holes drilled and the upright almost done. I’m going to have to shorten the legs a bit and shave off the corners on the sides to make for a more comfortable fit while seated… All in due time...

That’s what I thought. I’ll use it as a bowl horse as well. So I don’t want it to move if I’m using a draw knife or gouge, and certainly not that little chainsaw on a 4” disc (Lancelot tool)…

I see you used a plywood seat. That should work to keep your seat from being raw...
I am going to have to build me one of them. Someone gave me a stack of untreated 4x6 about 6 foot long.

Yes, I had a piece of 5/8 plywood I had been kicking out of the way for a while now. I’ve got some fake leather upholstery material to cover it with. I just have to find which box it’s in…. so it’ll likely be a plywood seat for a while...

I'm having a hard time seeing how this works. When you're done, please post a photo or two of it in use.

I’ll post pictures as I go along. This is my first attempt at making one, so there is competing (and possibly conflicting) entities on how it should work conceptually and how it will actually work. I have done my you tube due diligence and have a picture in my mind if what I want. Hopefully it will evolve in that direction.

Had a chance to make a little more progress on the shave horse. Still have to shorten the legs, build some replacement heads and round off some corners. With the foot piece that long some very slight pressure on it holds the work very tight. I still need to make the area in front of the seat more narrow. But that sucker doesn’t move. I was scraping on a hackberry log and it never moved. The frame is those electric pole crosspieces, the seat is 5/8” plywood and the rest is pecan. I just drilled lots of holes. Makes it easy to adjust and every hole makes the whole thing a little lighter.

I can also set a cinder block on the foot piece and work on a piece with the Lancelot tool from the sides while standing up.

Ah, now I see how it works. And the holes allow for a wide range of dimensions in the piece you're carving.

Yes, I haven’t had much time to even look at it much less work on it. It’s been a hellluva two weeks. We had end of school activities that took all my time last week. Granddaughter came form San Antonio on last Saturday (I went and picked her up). Had a big grandkid day on Sunday. My wife had to go into the hospital on Sunday afternoon with severe low potassium levels (still don’t know why), and got out on Tuesday afternoon… SA granddaughter was staying with my youngest son and his family. Then she was back here on Tue PM. Then Kid stuff Wed thru yesterday… they are all here again today but are preparing to leave. The house is a disaster and I have done nothing in the yard or shop or garden or anything else… I’m likely going to collapse when they leave and do nothing until tomorrow morning...

Throw in a hospital visit for two days…. I love my kids and grandkids visits. They go non-stop and I’m at a stop and go stage of life...

Cool Project!!
Glad to see you're doing stuff.
Have actually thought about something akin to this but no room....yet (some other stuff has to go).
I have set up a nice folding router table, and am going to make flattening jig that will fit on top of my table saw--have all the stuff.....just no time.

I had time to sorta finish it and set it aside before I was prepping for the hurricane that didn’t come here (Beryl)… one thing led to another and I haven’t touched it since… then I started on a shop reorganization, fall garden, shredding at the ranch, aerobic septic system install, and then there’s the mowing, mowing, mowing..and so on and so on and so on…. Now my wife wants to do a kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel,…. etc… I’m not going anywhere near those things so I will probably have plenty of shop time. I’m going to try to get things wrapped up in the shop this month and next so I can do some hunting and fishing with my grandkids on the weekends. Once I ge the garden in the plan is to build a fish/game/garden produce cleaning table on the side of the shop and I’m going to put the shave horse over there so I can be outside but under the shed with it.

Seems like I got a lot more accomplished while I was working. At least I was getting paid for it then… Now I just work...

I can identify! This glimpse into your life seems so much like the distractions that undoubtedly hit most of us. And your last comment, “Now I just work” really says it all! When I first retired, someone told me that one of the challenges would be to, in essence, take charge of your own calendar. Seems easy enough, but then well-intentioned people (family, friends, organizations, etc.) discover that you have “time.” Can quickly rob time from your planned hobbies! And then there is the deterioration that attacks your house and property, and the endless hours to just keep up with the projects that ensue over time! And don’t even get me started on the inverse correlation of available time as you proceed through retirement as it relates to doctor visits! Chuck

Cedar fever blew in the other day and I lost a day going to get a steroid shot and starting inside with a mask on. That’s one thing the masks do stop. Cedar pollen.
