Finished up some more carved burl bowls, well I might be redoing the finish on two. Been using tung oil varnish and it pooped in two of them, sanded the spot off and put more finish but still doesn’t look right. The finish is kind of pain to get looking just right and streak free. Sold the one from my past post this weekend and sold another at a different show. Put them at the entrance to my booth and people always stop. Tried using a belt sanded and grinder to put a flat spot on the bottoms but that didn’t work perfectly, would make a flat spot but the whole thing wouldn’t match up. Built a simple little jig with plywood, two pieces of wood with double sided tape to my router and flatten the bottom, works like a charm. 2 in the last pic sold, want to sell two more to justify to my wife to buy more burls haha

Very beautiful work. I can see why people would stop to look at those.

Awesome burl bowls! Would be interested to see pics of the jig you talked about for flattening. Chuck

Wow, Joseph those are spectacular in both figuring and execution department! All the “hidden gems” and “Artist” waiting to be discovered seems to reside right here at the Woodbarter! Very inspiring work.

Will take a pic later tonight but it's just a plywood bottom with two plywood sides that were cut the same width and screwed into the sides.

Thanks! Would it be possible for you to take a picture of the bottom of one of your burl creations so we can see the flattening you did with your jig? For some reason I was thinking you were trying to level the top of the bowl. Chuck
