In my wonderings here in the White Mountains of AZ sometimes I get waaaay off in the sticks a long way from any two trackers much less a road of any kind, and I stumbled on a section of logged old growth Douglas Fir with only the stumps of the logged trees 6 to 10 ft in diameter ( yes really ) 6 to 10', got to looking at them and the bark is still on the stumps and this bark is 6 to 8" thick and me being the sawdust brain that I am I figured something can be made from the bark so I packed a bunch home and this what I came up with, don't know if it will work or even be of any interest to you folks but here it is, let me know what you think, I'm sure it will need stabilized.
I made a few pot call blanks, call blanks, pen blanks and a few others.
The first 3 pictures, I sanded and lacquered them. The last 3 pictures are raw untouched.

Tell me what you think folks please, if anyone is interested I' cut some if not I'll burn it.

Those look super cool! Are they really light, i.e. not very dense?

Very very light my friend, I think they would be great for fly rod handles also, but then that's just me because being old and slow I have to think outside the box sometimes to get where I want to go.

I might try a pot blank or 2 . They would need stabilized and maybe cast to make them usable

I'll try to cut up a few pieces but I don't know how much I can get out of the piece I carried out it was only about 12" wide and 4' long that's all I could carry, not heavy just awkward and rough terrain, give me 2 or 3 days and ill get my quad in there and get plenty but we got a foot of snow today and I'm not tough enough anymore to fight the mountain and the snow so I'm just going to feed the fireplace till some of it melts but ill get back in there!

I'm going to beat the you know out of myself and abuse my quad just to get back up there bud I shouldn't even take a quad in there I should walk but the interest everybody has expressed means I can't carry enough out without my quad, if I can remember the camera yes I'll get pics, but my memory is about as long as this thumb I cut off so maybe on the pics.

To say the least rough ! But I love it, going to be fun getting back in with a quad, might have to winch her up a spot or two but I put one of those cheap little $49 2500# Harbour Freight winches on the front and that is some of the best money I ever spent, for $49 that is the pullingest puppy I've ever seen bar none! I love going where you should not be able to get to and still respect the land, I get in the woods and have more fun than a 70 year old should have! I'll bring some out for you guys, it will just be a few days.

I'm in for a some pen blanks and reel seat inserts. I can stabilize if non-stabilize is an option.

I'd be interested in knife blanks(1.25x1.75x5.5) or piece I can cut to knife blanks.

With it being 6" to 8" thick do you think you could get pepper mill sizes from it? If not, bottle stopper or duck call sized would be good.

Depending on cost I'm interested - I can stabilize.
