My brother, in Texas, posted a picture of a tree just cut down by his fence line. It had distinctive coloration that I didn't recognize. Maybe Beech; I know nothing about Beech. I asked him to grab a short section and seal up the ends (it was green).

The leaf picture is from a tree he believes is the same as the one cut down based on the bark and location. That said, it doesn't look quite the same to me ... 🤷‍♂️

Anyone know what this is?

Nevermind. My brother cut off the ends to have a fresh cut before sealing the log ... and all the color differential went away. Maybe Oak ???

Rays certainly look like oak. White specks are white rot.

What part of Texas? The leaves look like Texas Ash. Chuck
In an area called Sugarland Tx. My first thought when I saw the leaves was Ash or Beech. But I don't think that the tree shown (leaves) is the same as the cut down tree. Bark looks different.

I'll have to go look at what Texas Ash looks like. 👍

Tree pictured with leaves looks to be Black gum, log on the ground is an oak with blue-stained sapwood. After being cut, the blue stain is gone but you can still see some white rot.
