This is a piece from a black walnut root ball. Used dye and a little carving. It measures 22" across.

John, that's so cool, and must have a real presence with that size. I started trying to do something on smaller piece, about 14"...it got too busy, and the wood (also walnut) wasn't quite dry and warped a bit too. It had great flame in it to boot...so this reminds me of that piece that 'could have been'...
Excellent work. Would be curious to know how you did the center area that goes out radially, power or manual carve?

manual carve... the indents were added to disguise the poor job I did on the radial lines, they did help the piece I think.:ponder:

I like it a lot John, really rich looking, and that detail in the center is way cool and very finely done. The only suggestion I have is maybe add some texture or design to one of the outer rings, or something to make it look less like a hubcap, hope that doesn't sound harsh,.... but this IS the critique forum, and I trust you will be frank if asked to critique my work.....

That's not harsh, I appreciate the critique. I did get it off a 42 Ford!:lol2:

Man I really like that. I don't think it would have looked better in any other wood. It does have a very stately look to it. Well done.

Too cool! I love the carved center area, and I'm pretty sure I don't have the huevos to try and carve anything like that. I like the dyed area between the beads, too. I can't really find anything that I would change...
