I am in search of some (at least 10) black walnut 5/8 x 36 inches long for an upcoming birthday present. Does anyone here know of a good source to buy them without breaking the bank? Thanks

Actually, the length of the pieces need to be 18 inches. My thinking was to buy 36 inch dowels and cut them into 18 inch pieces. Thanks for the shared info. Weighing my opions.

Last dowels I made was before I had my lathe. I used a table saw and made octagons then used a power sander and rounded them. Granted they weren't perfect but it was going in handcrafted furniture where slight deviations help your case that it's hand crafted. I wound up with about 5/8 inch spalted maple dowels

I thought about turning them on my lathe, but decided to just try and purchase them. Nothing written in stone yet.

Bell forest has a decent selection of dowels. They definitely should have 18" black walnut. I got purpleheart and curly maple dowels from them in 3/4" and 1", and they were excellent quality and haven't warped in my shop at all over 8+ months.

You may also consider just getting a dowel plate like the one i have from DFM tool works and making your own. It might even cost less money depending on how many you need.
