Here is my latest project. A Goncalo Alves / Wenge 5 drawer box. (Or is it a chest??) The body is Goncalo Alves and the drawer fronts and back panel is Wenge. The drawers are made of Maple, and I lined them with Redheart. The dimensions are 18" wide, 10" deep, and 10.5" tall.
I'm always trying to come up with a unique or different twist for my builds to make them a bit more interesting. I came up with a latching mechanism for the drawers. They are locked in place by tabs on the drawer sides and are then retracted by squeezing small buttons on the drawer pull ends, allowing the drawer to be pulled open. It was a fun challenge! Thanks for looking. DSC_0027.JPG DSC_0037.JPG DSC_0036.JPG DSC_0035.JPG DSC_0033.JPG DSC_0031.JPG

Can't do 'Way Cool' and 'Eye Candy' at once. I'd like to see how your latch mechanism works.

Ditto what the others have said before me. Really beautiful piece and the locking drawer trick is awesome and not easy to do. Well done. How long did you have to sand on the wenge to get a decent finish? I find it's one of the more difficult woods to get a nice finish on.

Thanks. I have a Wenge board that my dad bought 50 years ago. It's been sitting on the shelf as I wanted to make something special with it. I still haven't found the right project for it though. So when I went looking for a contrasting wood to use against the Goncalo, I settled on another Wenge board I saw at the Woodcraft store. I picked one with a finer grain pattern. First time using it and I found it pretty easy to work with. It didn't splinter like I thought it would, sanded really easy, edges stayed crisp. I sanded it down to 320 and it finished about how I thought it would, being such open grain. I didn't want to try and fill it so I'm happy with it.

These ideas seem to come to me right before I fall asleep! I thought about this for a while and couldn't see why it would not work.
First step was to rout a recess in the center of the drawer front and then rout a channel all the way across the drawer front. The latches slide in the channel and travel is limited to a small glued on piece that sits in the recess. The latches are a tiny bit thinner than the channel. The small drawers are spring loaded against each other, and the large drawer has a stop for the spring. The drawer faces are screwed on from inside the drawer, through a slot in the latch, trapping the latch between them. The 'button' protrudes up through a slot in the drawer pull and out the ends. It takes a bit of fitting, trial and error to get them just right. Slots were routed into the interior panels before the front was glued on, to accept the latch ends. Every time I see a new picture it gets better. That red heart really pops. It does look a bit box-like on the outside and seems to want some kind of top detail but otherwise I can’t fault your build.
