There doesn't seem to be much here in the way of woodworking, so maybe someone who has lived here for longer than me might know? I'd love to be working with wood that isn't just dimensional lumber

A quick call to your local tree services may show up a sawmill if you ask them about trees and sawmills, if you are after green turning stock, you may have to warn them that you can't accept a dump truck load. Unless, of course, if you can. Then you can often get trees near you for nothing. And that part of the USA has quite a few yard trees that are not sold as lumber in the box stores. Eucalyptus, palms, olives, you name it, all the larger yard trees with leaves not needles tend to be quite nice.
