A few minutes ago I cranked open the oxygen side of my cutting torch and the line blew off the regulator body. It was LOUD. I figured it was a freak occurrence. I looked at the gauge and it was pegged. I figured it was wrong. That was mistake #1. So I grabbed some small hose clamps, cut the factory crimp off the end and clamped the hose back on with two clamps.

Mistake #2 - I cranked open the valve again and POP! this time the hose blew off the torch end and when it did it whipped into my right upper thigh leaving a serious bruise and severe stinging to the degree of about 10 red wasps all at once. For a few scary seconds I thought I had been injected with high pressure air and thought oh boy heart here it comes we're dead now. This time I realized the regulator dial was correct and the reg isn't working. If that hose had hit my extreme sensitive part just inches away I would still be rolling on the ground crying like a newborn.

Like I use to hear the training pilots tell the new pilots in training over my ICS during night flights- "trust your instruments!". Lesson learned. Off to the hardware store for a set of new regulators. :fit:

If you've never heard a hose blow off its much louder than a .22 and will get your attention for sure.

That's scary, Kevin! I'm glad you, & the boys, are okay. Coulda been a lot worse. :crutch:

(Not saying you don't), but I always crack the valves on my bottles, take a couple seconds to check things out, then crank the Ox. I've heard of a case or two where the needle valve came flying out, so I always stand off to the side or behind the regulators as well.

This may be a good time mention, to those who might not know, to never get any type oil or grease on the fittings for oxygen. Saw a brazing torch blown out of a guys hand because he didn't know about spontaineus combustion.
