Why did he write "burl" as "B.U.R.L."? What might that stand for?

OK, maybe it will turn out to be gorgeous wood that any of us would drool over. But based on what I've heard, some people have an overinflated idea of just how valuable burls are. And some people evidently don't want to pay for tree removal.

This is a real problem in the EU.
Here is one of my favourite sources of lumber explaining why your grandmas walnut tree is worthless to any lumberyard. And not to mention the rootball. Sadly in German but for those who are interested you can use a translator.
