On the night of its sinking, the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald included two cadets from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, part of Northwestern, Michigan College, my employer. These cadets were completing their sea time requirements that was required. The Maritime Academy and the college have always observed a Maritimers Memorial on the date of the ships sinking. Gordon Lightfoot became a benefactor to the College and the Maritime Academy program.
