I've seen a lot of bowls and stuff made from color pencils bunched together standing up, glued and/or cast together. I don't have any casting equipment, anyone up for the challenge?

I've seen em glued. Haven't seem casted ones...

Love to give it a try but haven't got my casting stuff yet. Been slowed down with a project around house holding me back. If I get soon will let you know. Sounds interesting.

I'd think you could do it with PR, abd if you poured in layers no need for a pressure pot.... I might have to give it a try next week when I do sine other casting....

One of the guys at my turning club has done a couple of different pieces like this -- simply gluing the pencils together with CA, no casting.

I feel like just glue isn't enough. There are bound to be voids between the pencils, as I'm sure they don't fit together nice and tight. Not to mention that the pencils are going to be made from the hardest wood. That is why I was thinking casting.

I'm just getting ready to try this myself since I've recently started casting. I was planning to just glue pencils together, but if I cast them, I could use the round ones that are more easily found than the hexagonal ones. Let me see what I can come up with.

The hexagon pencils fit tight to each other. Usually pencils are made from cedar. But not all of em. The round ones would look better casted. Maybe use black? It will be a good contrast to all the colors?

Interesting, and exposes the concerns I have!

Yesterday, I took some of the round colored pencils and am making a bottle stopper blank. I cut the pencils down to blank size and am casting them in resin to see how that works. I couldn't find any of the hexagonal pencils here locally, so I went with the round ones. I'll take the blank out of the pressure pot this evening and see how it turned out. If possible, I'll try and turn it tonight as well to see how this experiment worked overall.

Just be careful if you cast it. I had someone make me a cast colored pencil pot blank, and it blew apart. Not from the casting, but because the alumalite was only bonded with the colored wrapper of the pencils, and it peeled away. Perhaps it was the type of pencils, or my method of turning... or a combination of the two. But there are a few colored indentions in the ceiling of my shop now.

Thanks for the warning! I'll be sure and take the appropriate safety measures when I start turning the blank so that I don't end up with colored indentions on me :shok:

I just used 2 part epoxy on my bottle stopper. The first on I turned I glued it let it set for 10 min or so and turned it. I seen post yesterday on other site where some used pvc tube and pr resin.

I've used PVC to cast a bundle of colored pencils with resin. Seems to work well. Unfortunately, I've been busy with other projects so I haven't found time to chuck it up on the lathe yet. I've attached a picture. I plan on using these pieces to cast with other projects.
