Anyone interested in some Giant Pinecones? Three are 11" long x 4" across. The two painted ones are 6" x 6". I think these would make cool hollowforms. I will ship to you and add a sfrb of cherry burl pen blanks that I have for sale. In exchange I would like one of each of the pinecones sent back. IMG_1601.webp IMG_1570.webp

I'm not familiar with costs of casting. Not feasible or do I need to add more to the equation?

Just a quick guesstimate and a little number crunching and I am thinking it would take a minimum of 50 ounces of resin for the 11x4's and a minimum of 60 ounces of resin for the 6x6's. Not to be a buzz kill but that is a lot of resin. To put it in perspective, a typical 1 5/8" square by 6" game call waste wood blank takes around 6-8 ounces of resin. I don't know what other guys charge for casting but I can tell you that would be one very spendy very cool hollow form blank.

Wow!!! I guess they can be Christmas decorations the way they are.

Haha, yeah my wife has some big pine cones and I have thought about casting one just to say I have done it but the amount of resin it would take stops me every time. Maybe one of the other casters on here will chime in and tell you different.

Although I have made many pens, I have never made a pine cone pen. I have seen an acquaintance make one though. He did not stabilize the cone. In fact, he stripped it down to the core. He commented that he likes pine cones that squirrels have cleaned for him. Cut the core into two parts, measured and cut for lengths, drilled out and turned TBC. Used a bit of CA on some soft spots, laquer sanding sealer and laquer finish.

I did not care for the appearance with the cone spots but it finished nicely and no problems just using the pine core.
