Seems like a quite large box elder. I have nothing to do with this wood just thought it might have inerest! Opppps SORRY try this

Hey the 3rd time was the charmer. Whew-I need to go back to the shop or get the hammer to either adjust me or the machine...............:flag_of_truce::flag_of_truce::dash1::dash1:
 
Doesn't look like any BE I've ever seen. Looks more like Catalpa or Butternut or any number of other species besides BE.

Mike I called him - nice young man. He was interested to know for sure what it is. He guessed at the ID he's not real sure. I invited him to join and start an ID thread he said he might do that. I'd like us to help him ID it and possibly sell it he sounds like a nice kid. He said he can get bark and leaf pics so it shouldn't be hard to ID or at least rule out some things.

Cool post Mike I like this kind of thing.

I am a craigslist junkie so when I see them I will post. My WAG Elm. Whatever the Walla Walla area is unbelievably fertile with a milder climate-lower elavation then here. Also first permanant settlement in PNW was there. Some VERY big trees...... Pretty large chunks of lumber. Barely fits between wheelwells of fullsized truck.
 
I told him whatever it is it ias a non-native and was planted as an ornamental he said yes it came from an old homestead.

That would have been my guess. The homestead signs in the area go back into the 1850's. Beautiful farm ground- almost all trees in that area would have been planted. Marcus Whitman estblished the first permanent settlement there in the 1820-30's. The oregon trail went through there for a while until the indians got ticked off and killed him. So you have trees planted there 175 years ago.

I am the guy who posted the slabs on craigslist. After talking with Kevin on the phone I did a bit of research, and I'm pretty certain that it was an American Elm. I'm not sure how I decided it was a box elder, but I think the neighbor told me when I bought the house. It's actually kind of funny, because I used to work as a forester. I can name every coniferous tree in the Pacific northwest, but I don't know jack about deciduous trees.

Here is a pic of on the leaves from a sucker shoot. Can you guys confirm it is elm?

Hello, when You get a chance Introduce yourself- nice chunks of wood. My WAG was right-looks like elm leaves to me.

Yep you were right Mike. It's quite a large Boxelder Elm now that I think about it.
