I have cut three squares from my log shown below. All have a minimum width of 1.5 and are 14.5" long.
Square 1 is at the bottom and 3 is at the top. Square 1 has end checks so the defect free section is 12.5" long.
Square 2 has a couple hairline cracks that may be seen in the second photo and also had a chunk shear off on the jointer. Max depth is ~1/8" at end as may be seen on the left side in the last pic.
Square 3 is defect free.
I've applied one coat of waterborne PU to prevent more checking.
