Completed an ice cream paddle handle made from Quina. Finish was 10 coats of Wipe on Poly gloss, followed by 3 coats of Renaissance Wax. Chuck IMG_3253.jpeg

I have never heard of quina. Do you have the Latin name? Also that is a very nice scoop.

Quina

Latin: MYROXYLON PERUIFERUM Origin: CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA

Quina is the second of only two species in the Myroxylon genus and can be found in Central or South America. It comprises a special genus of trees commonly referred to as called Balsamo which are used in the production of a substance called Balsam of Peru, used as a fragrance in perfumes. It is also commonly used for flooring, furniture, interior trim, and turning stock. It may be slightly difficult to stain or glue this species, however it does finish quite well.

Quina can range from a lighter golden brown to a darker purplish red or burgundy color. It's grain pattern is usually interlocked with a medium to fine texture and open, medium sized pores. It also has a very distinctive spicy scent when being worked with.

Thanks. That is very helpful.

Edit: Oh it’s related to santos mahogany. Aah. This means I have something quite similar somewhere in my shop.

Great handle but it's still not getting me in the ice cream mood. Minus 6 this morning đŸ˜‚
There is no temperature too low for ice cream!! (right about 0 f here this morning)

Good looking handle on that paddle Chuck. I've got a pair of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 12" blanks of Quina--just went down to the shop & looked at them. Picked them up at a Rockler or Woodcraft 10+ years ago, marked down to $4.49 from the orginal $9.99 each. Forgot how dense/heavy they were!!

That scoop ain't big enough for Lil Mikey! One needs a larger scoop when eating Blue Bell! But he'd use it anyways! Great job Chuck!

Can't say I have ever had bad ice-cream, thus no need to paddle it.....Oh but do use ice-cream paddles to turn ice-cream. By the way, nice handle on that ice-cream open faced scoop.
