Large Veneer Lot – ~42,500 sq ft (Curly Maple, Sapele Pommele, Lacewood, etc.) – NY

Hi all - I’m a hobbyist woodworker who went (more than) a little overboard at an auction and couldn’t pass up the deals. The auction was the closure of Bauerschmidt & Sons, a storied high-end New York shop. I bought veneer for pennies on the dollar — and now I need to figure out what the hell to do with it. I’m in the healthcare business by day and just butcher wood in my shop on weekends, so this is way more material than I’ll ever touch in my lifetime (or my kids’ and grandkids’, and certainly more than my wife will let me store indoors)

This is a bulk-only sale — I’m not breaking it up.

Here’s a snapshot of what I ended up with:

• Curly Maple Veneer (~11,200 sf)
• Sapele Pommele Veneer (~9,072 sf)
• Figured Satinwood Veneer (~2,880 sf)
• Fumed Eucalyptus Veneer (~5,769 sf)
• Makore Veneer (~4,536 sf)
• Lacewood Veneer (~3,780 sf)
• Mixed Exotic Veneer incl. Ebony (~2,592 sf)
• Miscellaneous Veneer (~2,688 sf)
• Total: ~42,500 square feet

The veneer is still stored at the Bauerschmidt & Sons warehouse in New York. I’ve organized photos and the tally sheets by lot into a Google Drive folder so you can see what’s there:

I’m not looking to retire on this — just to move it quickly and hopefully cover some of the costs of the other items I picked up at the auction.
Price: $0.40/sf for the entire lot (~$17,000 total). $0.10/sf for the entire lot (~$4,200 total).

I know some of this has mixed quality (that’s typical with bulk lots) and I’ve priced it accordingly. My goal is just to move it quickly and cover some of the costs from other items I bought at the auction.

I don't know how familiar you are with veneer but I caution you that you need to be careful about how you advertise this stuff. I did a very quick scan of some of your items and noted the following

1) your "lacewood" veneer appears to be sycamore, not lacewood. That's not a bad thing since nicely figured sycamore veneer is almost as good as lacewood. To see the difference, to to my site for each (see my signature)
2) Some of the "pomelle" sapele is excellent pomelle figure but I think that a fair amount of it is long sheets with some pomelle at one end and bland otherwise (can't tell this for sure from the pics provided).

As I said, this was just a quick scan of a couple of items.

It is NOT unusual for bulk lots of this size to have such issues, you just need to be sure that your buyers understand this.

You MUST state a price for items you offer up for sale, otherwise I'll have to delete the post. I don't want to do that, so I suggest that you at least put up a price for one or two of the lots, or portions thereof to satisfy the rule.

"Is Anyone Interested In...." type of threads to "gauge interest" are not permitted anywhere on the forum. It is either posted as for sale or trade - or not at all.

I realize you ARE in a "gauging interest" situation and I sympathize, but I'm an a-hole when it comes to our rules, so indulge me, please.

Thanks for pointing that out — that’s exactly the kind of input I need. I’m definitely not an expert in veneer, just a hobbyist who bought way more than I can ever use. I’ve been going by the tally sheets and auction listings, but I realize those may not always be perfect.

I really appreciate corrections like this because I’d much rather be upfront than oversell anything. And yes, the price is absolutely going to reflect that — I’m looking to move this cheap and in bulk, and quickly, before I need to start worrying about long-term storage. Really I’m just trying to cover some of the costs from the other items I picked up at the same auction.

Please let me know if I missed anything; I’m a rule follower and definitely don’t want to get off on the wrong foot here.

I don't know how many people on here are looking for veneers, much less bulk lots of veneers. I'm pretty new here, but i don't see veneers discussed much or offered for sale. So you may struggle to unload all that here.

You might consider contacting Domex Hardwoods in Chalfont PA (suburb of Philly). He's basically a consignment shop for exotics and got himself into veneers somewhat recently by buying a bulk lot just like you did. That said, he told me he's planning to close the business to pursue a different venture from here on out. He said he hadn't gotten any new wood in years and was trying to clear out his existing inventory. But even if he doesn't want to take your lot of veneers, he might be able to help you unload it or provide some contacts. He told me he sold veneers to a lot of the cabinet makers in the Philly area as well as some abroad. So he might be a good resource given that you're only in NY.

After some helpful feedback from forum members and a closer look at my own numbers (and ignorance), I’m updating the price to $0.10/sf for the entire lot (~42,500 sf total).

The veneer is still stored at the Bauerschmidt & Sons warehouse in New York. I’ve organized photos and tally sheets in a Google Drive folder so you can see the details by lot:
