Madrone and bugs

Picked up this piece of Madrone a couple years ago and got it out to turn. There were a couple holes on the outside and didn’t think to much about it as the piece had been kiln dried(was told that). So I cut a turning blank out of the piece and was quite surprised how much activity had gone on inside the wood. Still tried by turning it round on the lathe. There's nothing wrong with that piece of wood. Blow out the holes as you progress, and when complete, call it a sieve. ........... Nubs

Those bugs really didn’t hold back!

I mounted it but I think it’d be like turning pressed wood without the glue. Have never seen bugs crisscross through previous paths like this. Came across two of the culprits while I turned it round too. I think the only thing holding it together really is the top and bottom which they didn’t seem to go through but in a few places. Hate it as I was hoping to have a Madrone bowl and was expecting a little Burl due to the eyes on one side. Oh well, on to the next piece!

Termites? Probably not. Big Ole wood grubs? Looks like ppb's also.
I am amazed it was so clean on outside!
My experience with madrone, which is limited. Seen a lot in wood piles. Great firewood. Not many bugs. 2. Thrown in pile and forgotten wet, no bugs, at least in piece I have. 3 cut into boards with no clue. Cracks bad case hardens, bad. 4 harvested, cut, boiled, kd, by someone who knew how, stunning burl and lumber. He made Maloff rockers out of it.

Yep, big wood grubs. Never heard of Madrone being a delicacy for grubs so I was shocked.
I’m really hoping the grubs didn’t get into the other woods I have stored. Didn’t notice any sawdust so hopefully I don’t have any issues. Will be mid week before I can pull things out of the connex.

I have found grubs in burl, mostly big leaf. Same environment. Talking trophy grubs but nothing like that as far as damage. I doubt they spread.
 
i have a sissoo chair bought from a retail furniture store, made in china or somewhere like that. one morning i came into the dining room to find a wood boring grub had been inside the seat platform for at least the 2 years i had had it. he made a wrong turn and came up through the seat. where he met his demise

Yeah, I can send it to you. Shoot me your info and I’ll box it up. Can’t guarantee when it will go out but within the next week or so. Wife has to drive me because of Macular Degeneration. See well enough to turn and do a few other woodworking things but not well enough to drive. If you epoxy or resin it be sure and share the results!

Thanks, Turf. I'll try to blow all the tracks out, and when it's done, I'll send it back to you.
I'm starting to have the eye issues you're having, but can still drive. That's good for me as I live outside of town, and single.
I am going to send my lathe control panel back to Teknatool today. It will be approximately 2-3 weeks before I get it back. So your possible delay in sending it might be a blessing. Looking forward to getting it and making something with it.

One of the first things I cut down when I bought the house was a mimosa (that was 46 years ago, and I'm still getting mimosa seedlings sprouting). The second thing was a holly that had a 16" to 18" trunk at the bottom. It was too close to the door and would scratch you every time you went in or out of the front door. Chain sawed it into some chunks and some boards - was gonna make a simple dresser box for my daughter, a walking stick from the top - and the rest, who knows - that was before I even thought about a lathe. Anyways, stored it in on the porch of our shed/playhouse. Did not know, but the poplar I used for the porch flooring had an infestation of PPB - probably gotten from an antique. Long story short, the PPB riddled the holly as well as a carpenter bee's kids. By the time I figured out that I had a problem, it was all too far damaged for the dresser box, but I did decide to turn some of the chunks (after microwaving to cook them bastards). By that time, I had my first lathe. Cleaned out all the dross and called bowls made out of Holy Holly. Sold every piece I made!
