Well, had some time today and a nice big chunk of Mesquite and a show coming. It had some spots that had to come off--almost too much on the sides, but it came through. I've also located glass cake covers that make it a complete cake stand and have some ready to go.
This one is 11 x 5 inches. I leave them kind of hefty---don't want Mom's cake to fall over! Initial finish is lacquer/blo, will put some epoxy on the top surface to insure a durable surface finish.
What look like cracks on the top are "shake"--stress marks common to Mesquite.
The dome fits on the ledge that I left--nice'n snug.

Nice piece! You might consider using wipe on poly for a durable final coat. In my experience, it's a lot easier to apply than epoxy.

Very nice! I agree with the wipe on poly comment - just used it for the first time yesterday on a bowl. Chuck

Have thought about that. May try it on the lathe once I'm satisfied that lacquer/blo dry enough, or try to arrange an area in shop so dust can't interfere---can't have it in the house--fumes.
