I have some stainless steel and would like to make some mortising chisels out of! what is the angle that they use on them? i know they are used for prying and not like your normal bench chisel! I know they are at a much greater angle than a bench chisel!
any help would be appreciated!

NO!!!! Never pry with a mortice chisel! You can gently "lever up" chips but never pry - that will damage your chisels for sure!

As for bevel angle they are generally 40 degrees - plus a micro bevel if you like and I recommend it.

Mortice chisels are a bit different in use, the higher bevel angle is a must to endure the impact from the heavy mallet blows.

I'd love to see them!

i tend to use the wrong terminology a lot, but that is what i meant. gently lever up so to speak. I will give it a go hopefully get a few blanks cut today and see how it goes. i do know this stuff is hard as a rock. should make for some nice chisels. have made a few knives out of and once they are completed i will show them as well.

yea, i did a lot of research on stainless, its not like heat treating carbon steel, you have to bring it up to a certain temp for about 30 mins and than air quench it. temper the steel 2 time,s at i think 400 degrees. than you have to freeze it, i am going to use dry ice, due to the fact i don't have any liquid nitrogen handy. than you have to temper them again 2 times i believe at 400.

I'm pretty new to the black arts, I do decent with carbon tool steels but I don't have any experience with stainless.

I'd be very interested to hear all about your experience with it!
