My name is hew! How do you do!?

Is that canted for a right hander or a left hander; and how the heck did you know to cant it?????????????

He knows his history. They were canted to clear the log better as you worked across it. That one would be canted left hand, from the looks of it.

Ahhh... direction of cut determines right or left hand cant, rather than which hand you're swinging with. That would make sense, now that you say that.

I bought a plumb hewing head a few months ago for 10 peanuts. I made a horrible choice of material to shape the handle out of. I made horrible choices in shape of the handle as well. In fact I oriented the grain incorrectly by mistake and the handle combusted shortly after my first swing of the ax. And chance you could send a diagram listing the overall suggested handle length and distance of the offset? I did a fair amount of research, but I do not recall nor did I even consider offseing the handle.

Please enjoy this photo of my miserable first axe fail!!!

They used a bigger version to hew logs into ties for railroad into the 50's. By mid 50's the small mills cut ties. People like in picture switched to hauling the logs to mill.

2? Cannot remember name 3 Brick Stafford 4 Pete Stafford
Looking at 2nd pic it always amazes me how flat and straight they hewed ties. Swinging big hewing axe was work.......

i Like to think I work hard to earn my keep. It is very difficult to imagine swinging an axe for a living. One of my woodworking goals is to build an heirloom piece entirely from wood that I processed from start to finish. This little Plumb axe is one more step towards that goal. Thanks for sharing the pictures,
