Hi, I want to get another blade for my Sargent Hercules hand plane, The plane is a 9 3/4 long. what blades will fit the one in it is just under 2” and 7 3/4 long, I saw several on ebay but they are for a Sargent 414 will they work thanks mike
I'm not familiar with your plane but if you can't find a blade, go to hochtools.com and ask Ron Hock for one. He makes all kinds of blades for hand planes.
I would think the blades from the 414 would work as they are both the same width/brand plane, but I'm not positive of that as all my planes are Stanley Bailey and I don't have any Sargents to compare.
With SB planes, the #4 and #5 planes both take the same blade (2"). Those two planes are the equivalent size to your plane and the 414. I would assume that Sargent followed the same economy and that the blade was interchangeable between all planes of the same width.
A possible alternative would be to get in contact with Lee Valley and see if they make a replacement that would work for you.
thanks Tim I know the width is the same but I didn't know if it would fit, I don't know that much about different planes. I was just trying the blade from my Millers Falls 814 and it fit my Sargent but the depth adjuster wouldn't work. The Sargent adjuster is a tad shorter than the MF. But the MF blade is warped, that may be the problem I will have to see if I can get that warp. Comparing plane prices and a blade/chip breaker set on ebay make one aware that its more cost effective to get another plane
