I was commissioned to make a nut bowl. I assume for the Holidays, when everyone puts out whole nuts in the shell—a big one. I didn't have anything dry this big and thick. So, I had to go to a stacking. 10" x 4 1/4"

Walnut and Maple.

Nice bowl!

Dad used insist that we had a bowl of nuts to crack and eat at Christmas. Think it was back to growing up with parents who lived through the depression and him living through WWII as a kid.

What we consider normal everyday snacks were a special treat that you only got once a year back then.

Think I may have to renew that tradition this year, and do a little teaching for the kids.

I remember waking up on Christmas morning and finding a fresh bowl of nuts on the table and we all got an orange or tangerine in our Christmas stocking.

Yep, same here. My Mom was the only one who ate Brazil Nuts--this thread has me wondering what tree those came from and how hard the wood was...

It looks to be very nice wood indeed, although trade in its timber is restricted in Brazil. Cook Woods sometimes carries it, although I don't think they have any at the moment. The Portuguese name is castanheiro; the scientific name is Bertholletia excelsa.

I remember as a kid shelling nuts for my Mom’s fruitcake. Brazil nuts were absolutely the hardest nuts to crack. Chuck

The bowl was for his son... just talked to him. He liked it so much, he wants one for himself... but a little smaller.

Heh heh, you'll need to go buy more glue. A little squeeze out is good, a lot of squeeze out must be better. Just kidding. Beautiful bowl.

And speaking of Brazil nuts - the main nut is about the size of a softball and weighs several pounds. Brazil nut trees are some of the tallest and when a nut falls it can certainly kill someone if it hits them. Inside the main nut is several of the "nuts" we see. The agouti (a rodent, sort of a cross between a rabbit and a squirrel) is the only critter with teeth strong enough to open a Brazil nut. Th agouti will gather nuts and stash them for later. So the agouti is a critical component of the ecology of the Brazil nut.

Mom liked shelling pecans. Since we were in the Home of the world's largest Pecan x3, we had a number of local pecan producers and already cracked pecans were easy to get. She would sit in her recliner shelling the pecans out while watching TV. Every Christmas, part of our Christmas gift from her and dad was a big bag of shelled pecans! Grandmom liked the little "native" pecans. She would crack and shell them - her and Granddad would pick them up off the ground from trees they knew about at Fort Sam Houston. One of their favorite collection areas on base was the artesian well. It was capped, but allowed to flow out of a big pipe under (at the tim) a lot of force and would blow out the pipe probably 50 feet. Taking their cups and getting some water from the stream was a favorite thing they did. Eating pecan pies was a frequent affair - as well as pecan pralines, and fudge with lots of pecans in it, and Texas sheet cake with fudge icing with lots of pecans! She also always had a big bowl of the big hybrid pecans sitting on the table. That bowl reminds me of that bowl!
