Doing some carving with Lancelot blade on my 4.5" angle grinder. WITH NO GUARD, Need I say more, I got my hand in the same spot the blade wanted to be simultaneously. Blade won. I cut the tendon & left a gnarly wound on the knuckle, if not for fear of infection I woulda put a band aid on it & finished the carving. But the more it bleed & the more it hurt I relented & made the trek to ER. Picture only shows 3 stitches but it took four the 3rd stitch came out while the Dr was wiping off wound. Guess she didn't tie it like it was a fishing knot.

Looks like I will be outta commission for at least 2 weeks.

Had to post pic's as a lesson to all use the F-N guards this could have been avoided, I use the grinder primarily for sanding so i don't ever use a guard. I will now.

I did the same thing with the same tool, without the guard and like a real dummy, without the handle, just had both hands wrapped around the body of the grinder ( figured I was tough enough to hold it if it kicked back ) when I was making the mantle for our fireplace, it grabbed and kicked back and now I have this nice scar about 2 1/2" in dia. just below the left knee on the inside of my leg. I learned real quick how tough I was not !!

Wow looks painful! I'm glad nothing else worse happened though! I've been fortunate that I haven't had anything major happen to me yet and I'm hoping to keep it that way, well, other than me being a dummy and touching the end of a turning tool after freshly sharpening it, but we all have those brief moments of stupidity. :rofl2:

Thanks for the reminder! Those little carving tools can be pretty dangerous as you've shown… Glad it wasn't worse!

Ouch! That's going to be a painful reminder for awhile of what not to do!
To do list:
Put gaurd on grinder!

Last time I used the same tool I finally had put the guard back on. I've been using it for years without the guard and have had similar accidents. That thing could grind a finger off in a split second if it hit you just right.

And can you imagine if it snagged your clothing during a kickback and ground its way into you at say, waist level. :shok:

My guard is on my grinder. Glad you didn't get it worse.

I am an example of when tools attack! I don't have many incidents but when I do it is always an ER visit. That damn Tetanus shot hurts, my arm is almost as sore as my hand. I tried to get out of getting one but nurse wasn't buying my story of just getting one few years back.

Looks like I will miss a couple days of work at my real job in addition to having to take it easy.

That's why I don't get stitches for small cuts like that. If you don't stich them sure they scar up bad but you can go on just working with a bandage on it versus the stitches. If it's on a non-moving area like the front of my leg I'll do stitches if it really needs it but on a joint like that forget it man you can't use it until it heals or you risk tearing them out.

Thanks for the warning and heads up, though I would have preferred that you not get hurt in the process. Hope it heals up well for you!

Man, really sorry to hear about that! Obviously an extensor tendon, was it fully severed? Are they willing to try a repair?

I cut two flexor tendons in my left index finger a little over a year ago that required reconstruction. It was a 9 month recovery and it's still stiff and sore at times. The surgeon told my it was his best repair, so... Idk, what that says about him, haha.

Speedy recovery, ma broth'a!

Man that is terrible. I have seen a lot of stories like this and it is the main reason I avoid those things. I know they are awesome but to be honest I am more scared of them than my chainsaw.

Reading this and the no guard decision makes me remember a quote that a wise man once left on my thread a while back that I would like to share.....
