It's is a true pine ( Pinus) in the pine family, Pinaceae, it's kind of misleading, as pinyon is actually the Spanish word for the pine nut which is harvested every year and roasted here in the southwest.
Thanks Joe, however I asked if you knew what species of pinyon you had, being there are a few native to AZ. Two needle and One needle are the most common, however Johann and Boarder pinyon also are native to AZ.

Edulis for the most part, my friend, 2 needle, however, it's pretty diverse up here and there are others.
