I lack several samples of various species of walnut. By this point in life I thought I would have traveled to many locations and collected some of these first hand. I have not.

I have, common Black, J. nigra, Japanese, J. ailantifolia, Claro, J. hindsii, Bastonge, J. hindsii x regia, Littleleaf, J. microcarpa, Nogel, J. neotropica, Persian, J. regia and Buartnut, J. x bixbyi, Butternut, J. cinerea

Looking to score a few US walnuts:
Southern California black walnut, J. californica
Arizona black walnut, J. major

There are a few others close by but over the boarder, J. jamaicensis, J. hirsuta, J. mollis.
Then a few more in South America....

@Ralph Muhs may be able to locate that juglans jamaicensis if he has time there while talking to builders and sawyers for the house that has the blue mahoe stairway

@Mike1950 may know where to find a couple of those. Or he may be like me and just deal with "walnut"

Maybe my Jamaican friends have a local common name for it. And how can I help?

The Advantage Lumber rep I spoke with said they lump their walnut, so any of the South American walnuts are sold under one name as brought in via import.

Ah thanks, I'll find my piece and taker a closer look then. I've seen it elsewhere so you might be able to get a definitive piece.

EDIT: I've found it and I can post a couple of pics if you're interested

West Indian walnut, not actually indigenous to Jamaica. More often found in cuba, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola. But I thought you might find it on the island as opposed to American walnut... Mr Peet was looking to get a few samples slices. Quarter sawn, rift sawn, and sap/Heartwood mix at a minimum. Looking for pieces over a half inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 6 inches long. Iwcs sample sizes for his sample collection.
