Last night I watched this video. I thought it was pretty darn clever as I have never seen or heard from any turner about something like this. The wood turner also explains all the processes in very clear understandable steps, even though he's from somewhere in Eastern Europe and has a slight accent. His name is Tomislav Tomasic. He turns a ball that the hidden center pops out revealing a lidded box. I wish my lathe was operable cuz that would be the challenge piece I would enter, but Nova Teknatool is now ignoring me with my switch problem.

Check it out. It's a fascinating 54 minutes.

A friend has made several of these hidden-box-spheres, his set of 4 took first place in the Artistic category at Totally Turning this year. LINK

Yeah, I’ve watched a lot of his videos. I think he apprenticed under Richard Raffen years ago. Seems I remember hearing that on an old video. He’s very good about explaining what he’s doing as he goes along.

No, I have 2. It is a Powermatic 3520, 1997 year of manufacture. It has a Baldor motor and VFD, which most Powermatic service personnel have never heard of, so I can't get any help from them to see what my electrical problems are. VFD had a lose wire that came loose, had no idea where it went and I finally found a diagram, but the lathe worked for about 20-30 minutes before shutting down. I then used my VFD, which is a Hitachi that worked fine on my first PM 3520 before the crash. It work today, then shut down tomorrow, will work again at another date, then shuts down. I gave up on it and bought that Nova, which I am disappointed in Nova's service rather than the lathe. I would like to get it working again.
There is a snowbird that will be out here when it gets cooler that say's he will take a look at it when I finally call him to come out and try to fix it. ...... Nubs

Thanks Jerry, cool video and project! Definitely will be trying some of these in the future. Nothing overly difficult in the project, just have to pay attention to the steps and tolerances.
