Hi all, my name is John and I am an aspiring woodworker I guess you would say. I am really intrigued by woodturning and all the really cool different things that can be made with a wood lathe! I also really enjoy other aspects of woodworking as well but wood turning has mostly captured my attention. I would like to learn as much as I can from members here's well as share any knowledge that I have which may be useful to other members.

Nice looking projects, especially like the mushroom.

Just a tip, when posting projects, it's a common practice here to also post the wood used to prevent everybody asking "what wood is that?).

Thanks for the welcome. The mushroom is made from a couple chunks of Ca Cottonwood burl that I harvested from my moms property awhile back. I have a couple good size pieces that I haven't really figured out the best way to break down into smaller manageable pieces.

Thank you, I figured it would be a good idea to add a few pictures of my work so folks know that I am not just full of BS lol. Thanks for the welcome

I really don't have a favorite species yet to be honest. As I have only worked with a small amount of domestic species up until now. I really like turning the cottonwood burl though, it turns really nicely. That's what I turned the mushroom from actually. Oh and I actually reside in Chico Ca, but the funny part is that I was planning on moving to Texas as well but my wife realized how far from the grandkids it would be and changed her mind lol

Can't be. It's clearly on a flat surface (look at the wood grain) and while I first thought it was wood burning, I now think it's the photography/decopage/transfer trick, like this one that makes it look like I printed my son's face directly on the wood:

(this is about 30 years old and has begun to degrade)

Ah ha! lasered. That works, and probably a lot easier that the decoupage transfer thing I thought it was.
