Looking for some 1.5" x 1.5" x 6" two-toned amboyna burl such as this orientation. 3 or 4 1.25" x 1.25" x 5" - I could deal with.

Guess, it does not really make a difference, but would prefer red.

One problem. 2 tone sa and no sap is getting scarce. Most new amboyna coming into country has sap removed. The small indo sellers find it easier to remove sap and bark . The bug holes are usually in the sap. USDA does not like bug holes. A large crate container seller has more sophisticated ways of fumigation. But here is some pictures of what was marked afzealia. Could be amboyna. They both have same smell.

Don't really need Amboyna (Narra Burl) - Afzealia would be perfectly fine. Really want the definition as on the example, but I do like these. Are they all at least 1.5" x 1.5". I particularly like the left two and the right two, but like them all.

Clearly misrepresentation by their add calling it extremely rare. If it was so, the markets would not have it so easy to find. However, it is for sure beautiful.
Gilmer has had this for a long time. They want top dollar. It is quality old growth amboyna which is sorta rare. Gilmer is a good honest source of exotic wood.

I've found terms like "rare" to sometimes be relative. For example, if you're in a certain area of Australia, I think the ribbon-barked gum (Eucalyptus sheathiana) that I got from Brian is actually pretty damn common (and cheap). But if you're in North America, good luck finding it (unless you're part of an amazing group like this). Heck, I'd never even heard of it until Brian mentioned it (of course I'm new to all this, so I'll accept responsibility for my ignorance).

In fact, a couple of the woods on my want list are very common timber/lumber species in other parts (non-North America) of the world. And they're cheap. But I haven't been able to buy any because at least for the dealers I've found and contacted, I'd have to buy at least half a container's worth. Which seems excessive for a few pen blanks.

I second you on this; Gilmer's prices are pretty steep but they seem to be quite knowledgeable and honest. I've corresponded with Ian, and he's been quite helpful and seems like a straight shooter.

Have you ever bought from them. Pretty shallow to make judgements with 0000000 experience. Very analytical and scientific....
