Topics could be consolidated by a user in the Wood For Sale sub-forum?
(example, I have twenty different things in this topic...instead of twenty different topics each having its own thing in it)

I had thought about putting a topic on the Wood For Sale 'sub-forum', but have decided to not fight the I got this and this and this and this and this.....(you get the idea). Seems every time I think about putting an ad on, I'm looking at one or two individuals that have over 80% of the first page(and let's admit right now that no one really likes looking past the first page....I don't) almost completely to themselves.

I counted no less then 8 items on the first page by one person just moments ago.

I'll probably be 'hated' but I wanted to offer up some really cheap stuff just to members only this forum.

If we are going to pretend to be adults, let's stop the schoolyard BS. Both of you need to give links to what you are talking about. Cite it.

Are you suggesting that if someone is offering multiple pieces of one species of wood, that it be consolidated into one thread ???

Can't really link a 'page' because it would constantly update as time passes. And something's have changed since I went to bed...

About the best I can do is a 'screenshot' with a 'snip tool', uploaded to photobucket....

And what is with the 'pretend to be adult' and 'schoolyard BS' thing?
If you don't like me for whatever reason, stop beating around the bush and say it or ban me! I don't know what I did to you, but this topic was hopefully put in the right sub-forum addressing something I have seen. If you don't want true 'feedback' or 'suggestions' then maybe you should remove the sub-forum?

Scott (maybe I'll self ban) B

Not sure what the problem being addressed is. You go to the top if someone writes in your topic and it's the latest thing posted in the forum. It's not favoritism that triggers you higher. I don't see something sinister going on.

I am over the road for the weekend so I can't post links til I get home on sunday. My only observation is that it seems that the trend as of late is multiple people will post multiple threads of the same species one right on top of the other. This activity kinda clogs the for sale forum with one type of wood. Not sure how to solve this but if we could urge the guys doing this to combine threads of the same species to help conserve "1st page" space so more people get their wood seen on the first page. At the moment there is one species that has 8 individual threads by the same person. Another has 4 or 5. IMO these could be combined into one thread. I'm not mad about it or feel like they are doing wrong. I just thing the guys doing it are not thinking of how their postings will effect other members.

I have been here a long time- sometimes one person does make a lot of posting in a series- I have done it. others have also. Seems to work fine. Maybe we need to think about changin our ways and look past the first page if needed. I very seldom go to the sub forum anyhow- I stay on new posts.
personally It works just like it is for me.

It would cause more work (sorry) .......but what about having a tab link under the header (by species) that would take you to a page for that particular species only ?

Mike, I like the "new posts" function too !

Hey mike I agree that the system we have works. Posting multiple threads of the same species that are of similar size or purpose is what I am referring to. I can't remember a time when you have done this. I know you have that awesome BLM but I only remember a few threads posted at one time by you. You post the same species but different purpose and/or size in each thread.

Well, that could work - but only if the people posting stuck to it. I wouldn't expect moderators to spend time policing to ensure that the policy was followed. Besides, if I posted some elm for sale and then you posted 8 elm items for sale I wouldn't be on the first page. You're only moving the issue, not solving it.

I'm like Mike - the new posts/first unread function works just fine for stuff like this. Perhaps the severity of this issue is more related to the usage patterns of the viewers than those of the posters - that's why it seems like more of an issue to some folks than to others.

That is how I do it- probably driven by superior lack of typing skills. I guess if you were to place me in a group here and I have stated it before- I am against micro managing and this seems to fall under that heading. Me if I do not like what I see I move on and do not dwell on it. Having been an active mod here- They volunteer their time- we all might want to consider that when we post- Maybe consolidate your posts if you do not and consider also their time when we request them to do more. Personally I try to make it to where they have to do nothing..................

I too usually just go to the new posts & read them through, and that usually works for me.
However, one could consolidate by asking that each seller use one post for each type of wood, BUT making the title editable (or a subtitle) where you could say "New pieces added-date" - "more burls listed-date", etc, to let people know there have been new items posted to the listing. After, say, 2 weeks, the old thread is viewable, but closed to new posts (no longer getting bumped up) and the seller can relist that type of wood again in a new, fresh, updated post.

C'mon Mike, I know you enjoy seeing Kevin pulling nobs n flipping switches

All kidding aside, I don't want our Mods beat up either !

There are multiple people doing it. I agree with mike that this issue is a micro management issue. The guys doing it are in total compliance with the rules. The issue I believe is a big deal for some viewers and not so much for others. I am in different on the viewing I just voiced the fact that I noticed it happening

I know I've done it when I cut up that Olive stump lol. I would go outside n cut a chunk and post pics, then run with my chainsaw ( no chaps, helmet ....don't tell Kevin ) and cut another piece and do it again......Guilty

Lots of good discussion here guys. I don't know that there is a quick easy answer here. I see and understand both viewpoints. There have been a few really good suggestions here and I would ask that you keep those coming. This will play out with the premium memberships that are currently under consideration, but the other kinks that need ironing out need to come first.

In defense of how it is now ... I get very confused when people tag new items for sale onto the end of (especially multi-page) threads -- I'd much rather sellers be encouraged to start a new thread than "re-purpose" an existing one. But I'm easily confused.

It works for me as is, but I can understand the rationale for grouping things together. Marcus's recent HRB threads would be a great example of a place where multiple threads might be 'cleaner' if combined under a single sale thread. I personally don't want a policy about the topic, but I do see occasions where consolidation would make the sale and trade forums a little less jumbled.

On the flip side, I'm sure it's easier from a seller's prospective to keep things straight when threads are separated for individual pieces.

In other words, there's probably not a perfect system for both sides of a given deal... That's my $.02(before taxes).
