Australian handle blocks

lol, I used to really dislike oak myself. I just didn’t like that it was everywhere. I first gravitated towards maple. Then I ended up going to cherry and mahogany. Most of my furniture I built for my house is cherry, with the exception of my waterfall Bubinga table.
But I love the Australian Hairyoak, I can’t wait to turn a bowl from it.

but I got 2 pieces of purple wattle weighed and measured. I’ll included the first piece with this response. This is the best piece of mostly heartwood I have. This is probably going to be one of the better pieces I’ll ever have. I think it’s been illegal to cut since 1979 in south Australia where a majority of it grows. I’m not even sure if they’re allowed to harvest dead trees. Some parts of Australia that’s a law I’ve been told.

but this piece is about 10 1/8” x6” x 2 1/2” rounding down to the nearest quarter kg. It’s 2.75kg. So it’d be $165

sorry I do this by weight, but that’s how I buy it, so it’s simplest for me to keep it that way. If I cut it into clean pieces it’d be easier to have a flat price. In my Experience it seems Australians sell by kg vs the board ft.

I'll take the first piece of purple wattle for $165. And that's it. No more wood for me! lol I just liquidated the rest of my 3M stock :(

Yeah, I’ll do that. Do you need measurements for the boonaree and Yarran? the Yarran was 3.44kg so does $110 work?

If you happen to have the dimensions, I'll take them. If not, don't worry about it. I'll just measure them when I get them. I'm largely doing this for record keeping. Normally I would be using BF volume to compare pricing elsewhere, but in the case of pretty much all of these woods (other than gidgee) I can't even find them for sale elsewhere anyway. A couple Ive found on Aussie websites, but obviously I can't compare to pricing from their native land. So I'm basically just trusting that you aren't going to try to rip me off ha ha.

Oh and yes, $110 works for the Yarran.

I know if you cut a bunch of this stuff up into handle blocks like 6”x1 3/4” roughly seems you can get $20-$30 dollars a block from what I’ve observed. Many of these I’ve never seen on the U.S. Market. Some are even rare on the Australian Market. I mostly sell wood around cost. Sometimes I lose a bit, sometimes a small profit. My main goal has typically been to finance the buying of more woods I don’t have. I have about 800 species I can turn a bowl from or make a box of. Finding the time to make all that has proven difficult. I’ve debated trying to be a timber merchant as a side hustle. To make that worth while I’d have to charge more. Between the high shipping cost, taxes, and possibly now tariffs, plus all the time and effort. I guess we will see.

also sorry for the delay, my wife is back in the hospital. She had a kidney transplant 2 years ago, and now her new kidney is infected. Can’t catch a break.

for the Yarran it’s about 16 1/2” inches long. I estimated it averages about 7 1/2” wide and it’s 1 3/8”thick.

the boonaree is 10 3/4” x 2” x 1 1/2”

im also going to make the final post now. I want to get this shipped ASAP. I’m leaving town for a few days at the end of the week. My dad’s sister/ my aunt just passed away from cancer also

I hear you about the overload of wood. I'm sitting here buying more and I haven't made anything in the shop in months lol. I'm pushing triple digits in species and have only been at this for 1 year. It's addicting. And as far as reselling these rare species, I'm not sure i could bring myself to do that. Something that's this hard to get it probably want to hold onto and use myself. Before I even consider selling these, I'd first unload the wood i have too much of. I have an excess of east Indian rosewood, black palm, and genuine mahogany. The palm especially i can't see myself using up. It's just such a weird look. I've been thinking about listing some of these.

It's addicting. And as far as reselling these rare species, I'm not sure i could bring myself to do that. Something that's this hard to get it probably want to hold onto and use myself. Back when things were going better I used to turned bowls and go to craft shows and sell on Etsy. I probably have 100 Honduran mahogany bowl blanks. I could get it cheap enough, it turned very nicely, looked great and was a popular seller. A lot of what I'm selling now will hopefully finance getting some new species. I may be getting some Red Bauhinia(Lysipyllum carronii) 4400 on the Janka Scale according to the wood database. Ive got some leads on Acacie peuce. Things seem to happen slower in Australia. One guy has a few small logs, he said he'll get me a price eventually. 2 years in and still waiting. I fear it might be out of my price range. It's rare, those who have it don't want to sell it, and those that do want to sell it know what they have, and their prices are up there with things like Zitan. My friend offered a guy $2000 Australian (around $1400 US I think)for a 3kg log. and the guy laughed in his face. So no promises on ever getting that at a reasonable price

I’ll let you know. I’m $99 percent sure the red Bauhinia is happening. It’s much more common and not protected to my knowledge. Plus he sent me a video of the log already, so I know it exist
