Birch bowls

Not taking anything away from the burl cap as it's beautiful, but that spalted birch....WOW!
Great looking forms! And OH, by the way, spectacular wood! The spalted bowl is incredible, but I really like the subtle grain and color of the burl bowl.
Could you explain the quick stabilizing a little bit? Just mix epoxy, dilute with acetone and let it soak in?

Great save on the spalted birch. What resin did you use?

I used WiseBond quick-set seal and acetone. The quick-set normally only has a 10-12 minute work time but when you mix it with acetone it increases that time to about 45 minutes or more. And yes, I mix 60% resin to 40% acetone. The acetone not only extends the working time but it allows to resin to soak into the wood a lot more than it normally would and once the acetone evaporates, all you have left inside is the resin. You can use any type of resin, just make sure you mix it according to the directions and you’re good to go. The only other type of resin I have takes 3 days to cure so I didn’t have the patience for that. Once mixed, it’s as thin as water so I used a disposable foam brush with gloves because the acetone cuts through the glue holding the foam to the frame. I’m sure you can can use whatever you have but that’s all I’ve got.

Great job. We have cut a lot of birch but nothing nearly as spectacular as this.
