Superior insight-Ha. I just have a better handle on prices. Birdseye is an aberration. They put all the BEM logs in one part of yard, peel off bark on a little bit of log. The people with real superior insight-the log buyers come from all over the world and bid on these veneer log auctions. I only have this insight because I have a friend in Wisconsin that goes to these auctions. He cuts into lumber. The BEM lumber starts at $25 a bd ft wholesale. and most of it is 4/4. Thicker with heavy eyes is very expensive. veneer is the way to go for wider. wide boards can be weak in center and darker heartwood. Veneer will give you consistent figure. Good luck with box.
Interesting info......I have a few pieces of BEM veneer, thanks for the help!

I don't make a lot of rectangular boxes these days, but the linear requirement to do a continuous grain box adds up pretty quickly. Following Fibonacci's ratios, a 12" box front has a 7.5" box end--so if i'm absolutely perfect i need to resaw a 20" board to get that proportion in continuous grain in all 4 corners. That's a big box, but for things like our grandchildren's keepsake boxes i think i did the interiors at 12.5" x 9" so their parents could fit paper in flat. So the exterior board would have been 1.5" thick, 25"+ long, then resawn and cut sequentially to make the 4 sides with continuous grain in all 4 corners. Did those at 8" or 9" deep if i recall (been 7 years since the last one!!), and cut the lid off on a friend's Byrne's modeling saw to save the grain from that kerf.
Continuous grain looks awesome--but it's one of those things that only a fellow maker would ever see. But i still grin every time i see those boxes on the shelves of our sons' homes. Should take some pics some day!!
Closest thing I could find. It appears to be a smidge pricey, but I could see it looking awesome

I could not think of his name. But Bob is who I was talking about above. Also above I described above the color and eye variation in wide piece. Bob is cheap compared to others and honest.
Hey Mike, Thanks for the tip on this, I just ordered the perfect piece for what I wanted to do.....

That's a whole flock of birds-eyes! Might even be able to call that a murmuration of bird-eyes! Beautiful!!!

Thanks Mike and all the others. Aaron sells single pieces for me. He does a great job.Last I looked, he was not my sister. :>)

Man would i ever love to have a Kentucky long rifle in that, but sure would hate to pay for it.
I've built over a dozen, just the cost of steel parts, (for the good stuff) is around $1,000. Mine usually run around 3,000 to 4,000. They take anywhere from 120 to 200 hours of work, depending on the stock carving.
