Black Ash validation

Most of Paul's Black ash came from guys that sell black ash burl, so they were happy to sell him some shorts being it was just extra income.

The issue arises with common names. Swamp ash is a name often used for black ash, however, other people sell any ash cut in marsh and wet areas under the same name. That brings in Pumpkin ash, Green ash and a few others. When I told Paul this, he was very colorful (pissed). Soon there after, he informed me that he cleansed the shop and there was some left if we could stop over for a camp fire and cook out. We did. So, as for Black ash, I would say he has a high percentage correctly identified.
you also have to consider the cutters bias. He has a client that wants black ash burl which = all ash burl is black ash. burl is hard to ID species. smell tells for white-black and green. Mt. ash - burl is identical to black.

I've never seen Mountain ash (Sorbus spp.) burl processed. I've never seen any White ash (F. americana) or Green ash (F. pennsylvanica) burl with eyes. They have all been either star-burst burls or onoin burls.

Please keep us in the loop if you get your hands on any Mountain ash burl or ash burl other than Black. Thanks.
