Hate to keep boring you guys with my peppermills but I had to post this one for @manbuckwal. It is from a piece of Black oak that he included as a packing peanut with some other blanks that he sold for a site support donation. Never turned black oak before not sure I want to again unless it is this pretty. Stared with sharp chisels and finished with dull ones, had to wear a glove on my left hand to keep the shavings from blasting the hide off my fingers, and did the final turning with my 60 grit gouge. She's a beauty! BAB has never given that much trouble. Barry might be right.

It was pretty dry when I got it and I have been baking it for a month near the wood fired boiler so it is bone dry. Two sides turned pretty smooth but the other two were like turning end grain. Didn't drill bad and it sanded pretty fast and easy but I honestly started with 60 grit and would have use something courser if I had any. Been selling a mill now and again and give some away not sure I will part with this one.

Yep, its a lil rough turning but shines up nice . I believe @DKMD made one as well .
 
With that one, I think you could be known as Mr. Peppermill! Wow, that's nice! Sure looks HUGE, also. Chuck

actually it is quite short, did not measure it but maybe around 8".
 
BIG difference between BAB and BOB thanks for clearing that up Tom. I have never worked with BOB would like to give it a whack sometime.

Full face shield and leather gloves will help. If I were going to do many I would for sure get one of those woodtick carbide tools. OBTW nice ebony mill in the auction it will look sharp with some more finish.
 
That's nice looking! It's hard and heavy stuff, but it polishes up really well as you've shown.
