Blue Mahoe

That would be tremendous! When you get a chance let me know what you have. Chuck
These are the bluest pieces i have. I put in some green tape and purpleheart for color reference. These come from 3 sources.

1) The small rough scraps are from a knife scale seller on eBay. I bought a MFR box of offcuts that contained some blue Mahoe. These pieces are uniquely purple, but most are streaked with brown.

2) the small blocks are from oak bridge wood turning. They each have 1-2 mostly/fully blue faces, but the other faces are striped blue and tan. It's at least attractive striping. There are some purple stripes in these too. There are green tinges in these pieces, but i say they're more blue than green.

3) the 1" blank and the big block are from Joe at turners circle on ebay. The 1" blank is the bluest piece i own and the first piece of blue Mahoe i ever purchased lol. Joe hooked me up with the big piece a couple months ago cause i too was looking for blue colored blue Mahoe like you. I don't know for certain, but i suspect these 2 pieces came from the same tree.

Let me know what size you are looking for. I'm a little on the fence about selling the 1" blank to be honest since it's my best piece. But i can rip off a piece of the big block. I don't need the width for anything. It's more length that i care about.

And here's the best piece of the scraps from eBay, sanded to 400 with Odies oil. The odies made it slightly more amber, but the primary color is charcoal.

For those 2, I'd like to get $25 + shipping. That's what i paid from oakbrook, so just trying to break even is all. I can do whatever is cheapest between flat rate and pirateship. Or i could write a short story on one of the pieces and ship it media mail 😂
Sounds fair. How about ones in the other pics? Chuck

The other 2 pictures you quoted are (1) the big block from turners circle, and (2) the big block from turners circle with the 1" blank from turners circle on top.

I'm not willing to sell the entire big block, but i can cut you off a piece depending on how much you need.

The 1" blank is my best piece (the one I previously mentioned being reluctant to sell). It's almost entirely blue through and through. So i could probably let that go for say $28.

Not that I'm not willing to sell these pieces to you, but it just now occurred to me that joe over at turners circle on ebay offered me 2 blocks of mahoe when i inquired about it this summer. He had 2 blocks that were roughly the same size, and i choose the bluest of the two. So if you are looking for volume and are ok with the attached photos which he sent me in July, you might want to check with him first to see if he still has this block and would be willing to sell it to you. That would be more cost effective for you. But if that doesn't interest you, we can definitely continue this deal with my pieces. I just felt obligated to inform you once i remembered.

Thanks for the additional info. I will continue to investigate sources for more Blue Mahoe. At this point, I’ll take the 2 smaller pieces per the above posting, and pass on the 1” spindle. I’ll PM you with additional details on shipping, etc. Chuck

Interesting. Time to ask my French friends. (Though it’s lunchtime round here and the French will forget anything said or done at lunchtime)

Payment received. Wood packaged up but probably won't go out until Wednesday since I'm out of state tomorrow. You should have received a shipment email, but I'll DM the tracking in case.

Blue Mahoe received! All is well! Thanks! Chuck

@Nature Man, eBay user santosegardo has been posting several 1" - 3" thick blocks of blue mahoe on ebay this week if you're still in the market for some. I ordered some last night and spoke to him about stock. He generally only ships flat rate due to shipping costs from PR, but he can quote larger shipments if desired. He informed me he has mahoe up to 4" thick, up to 12" wide, and up to 40" long. He also told me that several mills in PR now have mahoe, so it seems maybe we might see it coming back in stock from other vendors as well in the near future.

I had a nice slice from the eBay chap in Puerto Rico last year, there are a few listed on there now.
I have some spare but it's all cut for flute blanks in matched pairs of 13 x 1 x 0.5". And I've had the best of the blue:) I can post a picture if anyone can use these. It's one of the best sounding flutes I've made.

Thanks! Appreciate that. I did buy some from him last year, and it had some good streaks of blue. But I can always use more. I will follow up. Chuck

Please post pics! Thanks. I might be interested, depending on size, and color. I need a clean 1” wide, nothing less, and as blue as possible. Chuck

Here's a couple of photos. I've rotated each pair 90 degrees between the photos. The blue is quite stripy and the exposed faces are darker. The waney edge piece is also spare.

These are also available for anyone wanting pairs of flute blanks (each pair is two of 13 x 1 x 0.5").

Have you looked at Hawaiian hau? That can also appear quite a dark blue.

Thanks for posting. I’m looking for more definitive blue, so I will pass. I will check on Hawaiian Hau. Appreciate the tip! Chuck
