Anyone have a larger chunk of bog oak for turning a bowl or vessel available? Doesn’t have to be ugly and full of holes but it would be a lot cooler if it was.
I have cleared an oak post or two out of a creek bottom. As in , in the muddy bottom of the creek . Also, somewhere around the house, I think I have an old stump from a lake bottom. Can't remember if it is oak or not. But those type places can give up some beautiful mineral stained oak.
Are you familiar with Louisiana sinker cypress? It's neither a true bog nor oak, but it's something.
What size(s) might you consider? I'll post a photo if interested.
Not familiar with that but if it’s cool wood I’m always open to the idea. 8” x 6” with 3”+ thickness would be the minimum. The bog oak, other than its rarity, was of interest more for color and durability.
It's dense and heavy: Much more so than standard cypress. It's got a vibrant array of earthy colors when finished, too.
My piece is from a project I did for a wedding gift for friends from New Orleans. It's about 7x15x1-6" thickness with undulating interest and some voids.
Last 2 photos show what it looks like when finished.
Completely different project potential but I like it. I would be interested in the thicker, void filled portion. That thin end could be cut off to make shipping easier. What do you want for it?
It could then fit in a MFRB. How about $45 shipped?
Caveat that the roads in North Texas are icy, and I may not be able to ship it out for a day or two.
That works. Funny to hear about ice on the roads stopping anything while living in Erie. We skate vehicles for months up here. No rush. Message me your payment details and I’ll get that over. Thanks
Got it! It's all boxed up with some funky friends featuring live edges and holes of their own.
Because of weather, it will be sent either tomorrow or Friday. Can't wait to see what becomes of them!
