Samples finish at 3" wide by 6" long by 1/2" thick. You said off this, no picture shown. I like sample blanks a bit bigger so I can work them to finish size. So 6 & 1/8" long works, 5/8ths thick gives some play to work it and extra packing to protect during shipping. If you rip 2 pieces at 3 & 1/8 wide, I'd share the other with Paul and that leaves 2- 5/8ths pen blanks for your stock. How does that sound? Not sure of the orientation of the block.I can cut you a slice for your collection off this 6x9” piece. How thick??
You won't see the gain by looking at photo posted too much dry diluted yellow glue that I use for sealer on it. Red Elm in my best guess.Sounds like a very fair offer, Thank you. Only one issue, the wood posted does not match Red elm, Ulmus rubra. I tagged Paul for a second opinion. Maybe I'm not seeing it, but I don't see any of the graining common to elm.
@phinds
It COULD be elm, maybe, but I agree w/ Mark. Doesn't look much like it. Can you show the end grain?Sounds like a very fair offer, Thank you. Mark, hope no one got hurt in the fire. Guess I was way off on identifying this wood. Ironic that you identified as flame cherry and then had to go to a fire...Albert,
Wood arrived this morning, very well packed... that is the good part. Had a structure fire-call before getting a good look at it. Down side, it matches 'Flame cherry'. I'd guess by weight and looks, common 'Black cherry'. I did not do a burn test or odor test. Need to get showered first, still have some soot in my system.
Think every one is ok. Ya, opened your package and said, "Well, that's not elm, it's flame cherry. "Had to run a few errands before lunch and had tones go off as we got home.Mark, hope no one got hurt in the fire. Guess I was way off on identifying this wood.
