I need a Medium small 6" x 6"x 1/4 - 1/2" . to patch the center
of a Bubinga 11" platter.
I made a stupid mistake and turned the center of my platter
too thin.....as you can see in the pic...
I would like to patch with Bubinga... but will take suggestions
of other woods to use to patch.....Paduak, redheart, mahogany,
are some Woods that I am considering.
I am sure there are others I have not considered.
suggestions will be entertained.
I will add a pic soon as i find it.....

diff lighting in dif rooms caused the pic tones
to be diff...
The cut piece is most realistic color....

I would think doing it with a contrasting wood would be cool. If it were mine I would do Holly.

I have bubinga. But I agree on contrast. Then it will look like you meant to...if you need it though, I have 4/4

I have no wood for you, but a thought. I like the way it looks sitting on the table with the black. Could take a piece of featureless white wood and dye it black.

A contrasting wood would be more appealing to the eye, in my opinion. Trying to match with the same species could be tough, and would probably be a distraction. I would opt for a darker wood. Chuck

I love these replies and am looking at all suggestions

and just maybe contrast is the answer...

So far I have tried black limba.....Bloodwood, holly, Tenn. red cedar which was really interesting, ..... purpleheart, trying
walnut tomorrow.....

So give me some more suggestions!!!!!!

When I mentioned the black color, I was thinking so grain direction/features wouldn't clash too much with the beauty of the bubinga.

However, what if you flip the idea. Instead of the bubinga being the focus, use it as the frame around a spectacular piece of some type of burl? Might take the platter to the next level of spectacular. If you did that, might also consider a small bead, or other dividing line between the bubinga and the center.

Michael, how big is that hole? If it's not too large, you could use a piece of that Texas Ebony I'm going to try and get in the mail today. Cut it end grain, and have a little sapwood along the hole edge, with the heartwood in the center? That might work. ............. Jerry (in Tucson)
