A local fella picked up my name from somewhere and asked if I would make something from a burl he had harvested off his family's property some years ago. Technically I am not sure this is a burl, it is probably a grow-over, but it does have some interesting figure. I was able to create what is shown. I took a lot of care and kept the speed down because of all the cracks. I used plastic wrap and several wraps of masking tape but it held together okay. Wall thickness if between 3/8 and 1/2 inch.
As shown, they are only sanded - the inside is sanded to 600 and the outside to 400. I do now have a couple coats of danish oil on them and will be try to buff them after they set for a few days.
I think it is maple - I thought it might be elm, but the grain is too fine to be elm. Other than the cracks, I have never had a piece that polished up like this with just sanding.
