Looking to trade this for something (preferably smaller, like pen blanks). Also, this weighs around 20-25 pounds (I'll get a more accurate weight later), so we'll have to figure that cost out.

Hi @BoonareeBurl this is a species I don’t have, so I’d be willing to trade with you. If we traded, I’d also be able to cut a flute blank from it to send to @daveflutes since I don’t think he has this one, and I’ll be sending him a package pretty soon. I could also cut a piece of it for @Friedrich9 if he wanted any, since I’ll be sending a package to him at some point.I have dozens of species to offer in trade, so I’m sure I could cut you a bunch of blanks. Just let me know what you have in mind. Feel free to send me a PM.

The edinam is 1” x 15/16”. The sweetbay is 2 inches wide, likely enough for two blanks. It’s really hard wood. The tallow is 1 7/8” wide. I have plenty of soft woods, but didn’t bother showing any of those. I think the southern magnolia and alder are the softest from this bunch.

Steven, good stuff. That Hawaiian tallow definitely interests me. Do you know if it's Eucalyptus microcorys?

Also, what's the wood on the far, far right? The brownish blank. Cam-something?

And is the sweetbay magnolia really hard? Janka is under 1,000, based on my research. Of course Janka isn't always the end all, be all for tough wood.

Thanks,

G

Hi Grant, the Hawaiian tallow came from https://kamuelahardwoods.com/wood-species/ You can see how they describe it if you scroll down to Tallow on this page. I've assumed that it is Eucalyptus microcorys. The piece I have is heavy and hard and has some waves to it. Dimensions are 1 5/16" x 1 7/8" x 6 1/4".

The wood on the far right is Canjerana/Cancharana (Cabralea Oblongifoliola) from Argentina. It has a rich brown nice color. Its not that heavy - and only medium hard. The piece has straight grain. 1" x 1 1/16" x 7 1/4"

The sweetbay is quite hard and heavy. Much harder and heavier than the southern magnolia for sure. Maybe because its heartwood from the center of the tree near the pith. It has a little pinkish color to it. The piece is 1 3/8 x 1 7/8" x 5 11/16". Its the only piece in the lot that is not quite 6". Believe it or not, the sweetbay piece feels as hard and heavy as the tallow.

Here are the names of all the pieces in the picture:

Tallow - Eucalyptus microcorys from Hawaii
Sweetbay -Magnolia virginiana from Virginia
Edinam - Entandrophagma angolense
Magnolia - magnolia grandiflora from Virginia
Alder - Alnus orientalis from Turkey
Kiawe - Prosopis pallida from Hawaii
White mulberry - Morus Alba
Red milkwood - (mimusops obovata). From gilmerwoods a long time ago I think.
Loro Blanco (Bastardiopsis densiflora) from Argentina
Kamani from Hawaiia (Calophyllum inophyllum)
Mimosa - Albizia julibrissin from North Carolina
Canjerana/Cancharana - (Cabralea Oblongifoliola) from Argentina
