So ... I want to get into wood carving on my bowls. I like the look of spiral carved bowls and I'd like to know what carving tools are good to use. I know Pfeils are really good, and I have my eye on them. I just don't have the $800 or so to get them. I'm thinking of buying them one at a time (instead of a group) when I need them as an option, too.

What other brands out there are good quality?

Thanks for the input!

Thinking about hand carving or power carving? I play around with a Ryobi recip carver, and mostly use just a vee cutter and a shallow gouge for roughing, then a bunch of sanding. Even if going the hand carve route, for doing spirals, I don't think you'd need more than a couple individual tools. Flex cut is another brand worth considering, whether hand or power carving.
